New Mexico--Land of Enchantment

 Did you know many films have been made in New Mexico?  The first movie filmed in New Mexico was a documentary in 1898.  

There are at least six films being filmed in New Mexico right now including The Loop with Rachel Nichols and Jackson Hurst; Due Date with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Gallafinkis; and Passion Play with Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox.

This summer Roy, New Mexico became the film set for a film due to be released in December, 2009

Did you Hear About the Morgans?

Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant, Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburger.

Roy was transformed to represent Ray, Wyoming.  Several of the local businesses were featured in the movie.  Our famous Annette’s Cafe was featured in the film too.  Because the film makers enjoyed Annette’s spirit, they decided to keep the name of the restaurant in the movie as Annette’s.

Filmmakers chose Roy, New Mexico because of our home-style hospitality and simple layout of our community.

Other movies that have been filmed over the years in New Mexico include: Beer for My Horses, All the Pretty Horses, Easy Rider, Grapes of Wrath, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Shadow of Doubt, American Graffiti, and Traffic.

Roy, New Mexico Announces the Grand Opening of Rough and Tough Embroidery; Home to Digitized Custom Machine Embroidery

On Saturday, October 17, 2009, the Rough and Tough Embrodery Company had its Grand Opening and Open House from 11 am to 4pm in Roy, New Mexico.  Juanita Baker, Business Manager, and Jackie Shaw, Assistant Manager welcomed about sixty-five guests and customers.

Rough and Tough Embroidery Company moved into the recently renovated A. Blasi and Sons Food Store Building at 120 East Third Street, just East of the Chill ‘n’ Grill Restaurant.  The business has been in existence for the past year and a half.  The company was housed and “incubated” at Roy Municipal Schools.  Melissa Hartley and her class of entrepreneurs first started the business in the Spring of 2008 after winning the Entrepreneurial Fair competition held at Mosquero Schools.  Students won $1000 to be split evenly.  The business received two ENMR grants which provided startup funds for equipment and supplies.  Roy Schools received an additional revitalization grant.

Owners of the Blasi Building, Jan Garrett and Sandy Ray also received a $5000 grant to help with renovation of the building.  As part of the grant process, the Blasi Building will be home to the embroidery company free of charge for one year.  Renovation needs provided job opportunities for local craftsmen and electricians.  Students were hired to help with the initial cleanup of the building.  Renovation will continue with new plumbing and much needed work on the exterior of the building.

The main purpose Juanita and Jackie had in mind for this day was to let the community and surrounding areas know that they are in a new location and are open for business.  During the day there were several items that were sold and ordered by guests and customers along with promises for more orders.  The ladies are also trying to broaden the range of items they have.  They will be incorporating many new items over the next few months.

Throughout the day, Juanita and Jackie had drawings for door prizes.  The following is the results from the drawings:

Celebration–October 17, 2009

We had a wonderful time at our Rough and Tough Embroidery Open House Celebration in Roy, New Mexico with over 60 visitors!  (That is a lot of visitors for our little town of Roy, New Mexico!)

We are so excited to be in our new embroidery store  in Roy, New Mexico.  Thank you to our very generous landlords–Jan Garrett and Sandy Ray.  Jan and Sandy have worked hard to fix up the Historic Blasi Building with new windows, paint and cupboards. 

We have our digitizer and embroidery machines set up and ready to go.  If you are ever in the area, we hope you would stop buy and say Hello.  We have several machine embroidery projects on display and always welcome visitors to our little New Mexico town of Roy.
